Superfund Research Center, Research Translation and Community Engagement

• UC San Diego’s Superfund Research Center brings together investigators with complimentary expertise from 10 academic departments, Organized Research Units and Institutes spanning several campus divisions. Dr. Robert Tukey is the PI of the Center as a whole. Dr. Keith Pezzoli is principal investigator of two core components:  Community Engagement (CE) and Research Translation.  The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) awarded our Center with $45million over the past 16 years; with Dr. Pezzoli managing $4.5million of it.

• Our Community Engagement team shares knowledge and tools with environmental justice communities in the U.S.-Mexican Border region, affected by hazardous waste and toxicants. We create trusted community-university partnerships that bring science to the people through place-based, problem-solving, solutions-oriented research, leadership development and technical capacity building.

• Our Research Translation team concentrates on improving environmental monitoring, risk assessment and remediation of toxicants. We communicate complex research findings to government, industry and broader audiences through periodic workshops; symposia; participation in regional, national and international conferences; publications, and Web-based systems.

Bioregional Center for Sustainablity Science, Planning and Design (Bioregional Center)

The Bioregional Center is a multidivisional research unit led by UC San Diego’s Urban Studies and Planning Program with participants from Communication, Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Arts and Humanities, the Medical School, Qualcomm Institute, San Diego Supercomputer Center, and Scripps Institute of Oceanography, among others.

The Bioregional Center aims to improve the role of science and research in public reasoning, planning, policy-making and sustainable development—with an emphasis on the following objectives:  (1) improve how human and natural systems interact in our built environment to the extent that social life and livelihood become sustainably embedded (rooted) in a place’s landscapes, watersheds and ecosystems, literally and imaginatively; (2) enable authentic participatory planning and networking necessary to eradicate root causes of economic, social and cultural stresses; ecosystem degradation, health disparities and climate change, and (3) support the bioregional transition – create new socio-economic, cultural and institutional relationships necessary for urban and metropolitan needs and demands to support as opposed to undermine the value of rural places, working landscapes and wildlands.
